I would think that's more of a W10 problem. What have you tried and what
(error) message do you get?

When I search for 'agent.ini' I can't find it.
I need to know where it's physically located.
I guess I don't have permission to search in the
directory where it's located; even though I'm Administrator.

What tool are you using to search?

When you invoke agent, do you use a shortcut? If so, that shortcut
will specify the directory where Agent should look for the various
files it needs.

The shortcut points to the working directory in Program Files.
I think the .ini file I want is somewhere in:
c users admin appdata local

My problem is a Win 10 directory permission problem, and not
an Agent specefic problem.

Search for agent.ini in Agent help.

It'll point you at another help topic, "Agent's Directories and Files".
That'll lead you in the right direction.

Too long, didn't read?

C:\Users\(you)\AppData\Roaming\Forte\Agent

It's hidden at the AppData level, thanks Microsoft. You can just type it
in the Finder path bar though.

But I hope you get some use out of knowing the Agent help is very
helpful.

It's not permissions as such, it's Windows hiding stuff from you to
protect your brain from exploding with how stupid Windows file locations
are now...

One can take ownership of files without downloading any, er, “small hacks”.

I have to modify 'agent.ini' and Win 10 won't give me permission.
A. If you first installed Agent with the installer (clean install)
and then ran Agent, your AGENT.INI and Agent data would be in
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Forte\Agent

B. If you copied Agent from Windows XP to Windows 10, and you
put the copy in Windows 10 like this
* agent.exe in C:\Program Files (x86)\Agent
* AGENT.INI and Agent data in C:\Program Files (x86)\Agent\Data
then
(a) That is not how you should copy Agent to Windows 10;
(b) Your actual AGENT.INI and Agent data are likely to be in
C:\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Agent\Data
That is not Agent's doing. That what Windows 10 does when you try
to keep data files inside "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)".
Windows has been like this since Vista.

You are going to find it extremely hard to find that VirtualStore
folder because Windows 10 hides it even when you select "Show
hidden files, folders and drives". Instead, copy and paste the
below into File Explorer's location bar

%LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore\

You could always _try_ doing the following
1. Copy AGENT.INI out of "C:\Program Files (x86)\Agent\Data"
2. Modify the copy
3. Copy your modified version back into
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Agent\Data"
However your changes might not "take" if Windows considers the
copy of AGENT.INI in the VirtualStore to be the master copy.

=====================================================================

See this page in the Agent help file:

Index >> Vista >> Agent and Windows Vista

Whatever it says about Vista also applies to Windows 10.

Not technically true. If it's your personal preference then fine, you
have the backing of years of headaches at Microsoft where they add
special cases for specific apps and implement weird bug-for-bug
compatibility layers and data shims that quietly copy read/write files
out of Program Files where they shouldn't be to a well hidden
home-folder directory so they're writeable but still leave the old files
in place but don't let the program see those and redirect to the hidden
folder... I'm sure fully half of Windows code is on your side.

If you've made the Program Files directory writeable by normal users, so
making it back-compatible the simple and ugly way, then you've basically
overridden a decade of MS slow movements towards computer security.
Don't do that. You'll end up with your entire machine encrypted by
WannaCry or something more self-installing.

Also Win8/10 will fix that on update, breaking a bunch of your stuff
that you've hand-mangled out of spec. Win10 will pretty much insist on
re-fixing it every chance it gets, and for good reasons.

Okay, well that gives me some idea of where you're coming from and how
many times you've not had to deal with peculiar issues after upgrades
that silently go away on a test reinstall on a blank drive.

Not true. I have been using my method since XP and when Win 10 made
changes more problematic, it has been great. I know where my DATA
folder is without looking very far. It also makes backing up the DATA
folder easier so if/when it needs to be copied to a new installation I
know the locations. No more permission problems !

I used to run the Agent program and files from a USB memory drive, so

Is there a way to see X-Face on Agent?

I noticed you and I and sjb use them.

There was a patch for Agent to see X-Faces as far back as Agent 1.92
Search this site for: Aggtool
http://users.telenet.be/sb/agent/

Even console apps like Mutt and slrn can use X-Face:

I was searching for something that didn't exist!

I'm using the warez version of Agent 8 and the destructions said to
put 'regkey.txt' in the same folder as 'agent.ini' before I applied
the crack that would patch 'Agent.exe'

I had to run Agent for the first time to generate not just the .ini
file, but the .../Forte/Agent directories.

I just ran it twice and overwrote.

Forte aren't they are struggling because of all the people who use free and

Everything Usenet related is struggling because people are on social
media and torrenting nowdays.

Forte makes their money by selling access to usenet via Agent Usenet.
Look at their website where they advertise:
"Forté has optimized and redesigned Agent 8 to work seamlessly with
large Usenet binaries."
Since it's inception Agent has always been about the binaries. Yenc,
pars, .NZB's.

What do you think is on those news servers? Cat videos?
Look at the 100 most active newsgroups:
http://newsgroupfinder.com/s.php?a=top100
It's all copyrighted material.

Forte's business model for decades has been facilitating the theft of
copywrited material.

Do you know how I got my warez Agent 8? I used Agent 7 to download it
off of Forte's news servers. (Actually they peer with Easynews.) Isn't
irony ironic.

I'd never use Win 10 after I found out about the spying, I was just
screwing around with it. I switched to Linux Mint.

Every version of Agent I've tried works great in Linux on wine (or
crossover - like a commercial wine.)

There are tons of newsreaders for Linux but I'd rather use Agent. I've
been using it for years and am a real fanboi - I'm just not blind to
it's history and what it's for.
