with Agent?
The most common causes for not being able to launch a file are not
having a program associated with the file type/s in Windows, the
association not correct in Windows, or there's been an entry added to
Agent's MIME Types for the file type where it shouldn't have been.

If, for example, the files you're trying to launch are jpeg images,
open your image viewer and find the file association settings, and
ensure you have selected jpeg to be associated with your image viewing
program. Using Windows Explorer find a jpeg, and double-clicking on
the file should open it in that image viewer. If you're successful in
Windows, Agent should therefore be able to call up that image viewer
for viewing of jpeg files when launching in Agent.

Still using jpeg files as an example, in Agent go to
Options > General Preferences > MIME Types.
In the top section under Type/Subtype, select the line with
image/jpeg.
In the lower section under 'Settings for image/jpeg', make sure the
'Application' box is blank.

If this hasn't helped and you're still having trouble, post back with
more details and information of the type of files you're trying to
launch: the program you use to view these files, if you're able to
launch these files in Windows by double-clicking, and the settings (if
any) you have in Agent's MIME Types for the file type.

MPG files is the subject. Never usually a problem, unless the file
looks something like XXXX.mpg.001

That's when I get a message "No application...octet-stream"

I did add the mpg to the options/pref/mime field, but that didn't
help. It's only when numbers are added after the .mpg.

Thx again

These are partial files, you need to collect the set, save them all
and join them all together with a file unsplitter (mastersplit,
hjsplit, whatever).

That's when I get a message "No application...octet-stream"
The message headers say the content of the attachment is
"octet-stream". I wouldn't expect there to be a handler for this, it's
a generic "uhhh, this is some random binary crap" label.

And Windows doesn't have anything associated with the extension .001
either.

So - get all the files, save them, join them, and you have an XXXX.mpg
finally.

Cheers - Jaimie

No, it wouldn't have helped (as Jaimie has explained). Also see:
<http://www.forteinc.com/agent/faq.php#2A9CE348313CD4E585256C410002F867>

It's best _not_ to add any entries to Agent's MIME Types unless
needed, as Agent uses Windows file associations. For launching and
viewing files in Agent (provided they are viewable/playable as is),
you usually only add an entry if you want to use a different program
other than your system's default (associated) program for a file type,
and it's the path in Application box that is then used by Agent.
